How the Amazon link generator works

Three steps stand between a raw product page and a commission-ready link. The tool above automates every one of them — no spreadsheets, no broken URLs, no missed credit.

1

Paste the product URL

Works with any Amazon storefront — .in, .com, .co.uk, amzn.to short links and dirty URLs full of ref_ noise.

2

Add your tracking ID

Your tag is the Associates ID Amazon uses to credit your account. Optionally add ascsubtag to split performance by campaign, channel or post.

3

Copy & share

The output URL is sanitized, parameters are merged correctly, and your tracking ID stays saved locally so you never have to retype it.

What is ascsubtag?

ascsubtag is Amazon's sub-tag parameter — a free-form label you attach to an Associates link so that clicks can be grouped in your reports. It appears in Associates Central under the Sub Tag column of the Tracking Report, and in the Orders report once a click converts.

The distinction that matters: tag decides who gets paid. ascsubtag decides how the click is labelled. Removing the sub-tag costs you reporting detail; removing the tag costs you the commission. Most affiliates create a handful of tracking IDs for broad buckets and then use sub-tags for the fine detail underneath, because Associates accounts cap how many tracking IDs you can hold but place no meaningful limit on sub-tag values.

Property Value
PurposeSub-tag / click label for report segmentation
Required? No — optional. tag alone earns commission.
Where it appearsAssociates Central → Reports → Sub Tag column
Safe charactersLetters, digits, hyphen, underscore. Avoid spaces, &, # and non-ASCII — they get truncated or mangled.
Practical lengthKeep it well under 100 characters. Long values are trimmed in reports.
Personal dataNever put user IDs, emails or anything identifying a visitor in it.

A fully tagged link looks like this:

https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0EXAMPLE?tag=yourtag-21&ascsubtag=tg_main_post42

A useful convention is to encode more than one dimension into a single value with a separator — channel_campaign_post — since Amazon gives you only one sub-tag slot, unlike Flipkart's two affExtParam slots.

What each part of an Associates URL actually does — and what you can safely delete.

Parameter Required What it does
tagYesYour tracking ID. Without it the click earns nothing at all.
ascsubtagNoSub-tag label shown in the Sub Tag report column.
/dp/ASINYesThe product itself. /dp/ is the short canonical form — prefer it over long /gp/product/ paths.
th, pscNoVariant selectors. Keep them only when you are linking to a specific size or colour.
ref, pf_rd_*, pd_rd_*NoAmazon's own internal navigation breadcrumbs. Safe to strip — they carry no affiliate value.
linkCode, creativeASINNoLegacy SiteStripe parameters. Harmless, but unnecessary on a plain text link.

How to check an Amazon affiliate link is working

Before a link goes out to an audience, it is worth thirty seconds of checking. In order of how often each one actually catches something:

  1. 1Check the country suffix matches the storefront. A -21 tag on amazon.com earns nothing. Each Amazon marketplace needs its own tracking ID: -21 for amazon.in, -20 for amazon.com, -21 for most of Europe.
  2. 2Confirm tag= survives the redirect. Open the link and look at the final address bar. Shorteners, link cloakers and some chat apps strip query strings.
  3. 3Make sure it is your tag, not someone else's. Copying a URL from a deal group or another blog carries their tag. This generator overwrites any existing tag with yours for exactly this reason.
  4. 4Look for the click in Associates Central. Reports lag by a few hours. An empty report minutes after a click is normal, not evidence of a broken link.

Note that clicking your own links to test them is fine, but buying through them is not — self-referral purchases are explicitly against the Associates Operating Agreement and are a common reason accounts get closed.

To run the first three checks automatically, paste the finished link into the Amazon affiliate link checker — it reads the tag, flags a country mismatch and warns about a malformed ascsubtag.

Common problems and what causes them

Symptom Usual cause
Clicks but no earningsOften just the 24-hour cookie window expiring. Also check the tag's country suffix matches the storefront the buyer landed on.
No clicks recordedThe tag parameter was stripped by a shortener, or the link points at a non-Associates domain.
Sub Tag column emptyascsubtag contained a space or special character and was dropped.
Earnings from products you never linkedExpected behaviour — Amazon credits anything the visitor buys in the session, not only the product you linked.
Orders shrink at month endReturns and cancellations are deducted after the return window closes.

Amazon Associates best practices

Frequently asked questions

What is an Amazon Associates tracking ID?

Your tracking ID (also called store ID or tag) is a unique string Amazon assigns when you join the Associates program. It usually ends in a country suffix — -21 for India, -20 for the US. Every commission Amazon pays you is keyed to this ID being present on the click.

Does this tool work with amzn.to short links?

Yes. Paste an amzn.to URL and the generator simply appends your tag. For full control we recommend the long-form product URL because it lets us deduplicate query parameters and remove tracking junk automatically.

Do I need a different tracking ID for each Amazon country?

Yes. Each Amazon marketplace runs its own Associates programme with its own tracking IDs, and a tag from one storefront earns nothing on another. An amazon.in tag ending -21 pasted onto an amazon.com URL is the single most common reason a link records clicks but never pays. Amazon's OneLink can bridge storefronts, but the tag still has to be valid for wherever the visitor lands.

How many sub-tags can I use?

There is one ascsubtag slot per link, but no practical limit on how many distinct values you use across your links. Because tracking IDs are capped and sub-tags are not, the usual pattern is a small number of tracking IDs for major properties and sub-tags for everything below that — per channel, per post, per A/B variant.

Will the link replace someone else's existing tag?

Yes. If the input URL already carries a tag= parameter, this tool overwrites it with yours so you don't accidentally credit a competitor or an old campaign.

Is my tracking ID stored on a server?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Your tag is saved in localStorage on this device only — nothing is sent to our servers. Open the page in a private window if you don't want it remembered.

How is ascsubtag different from tag?

tag identifies who earns the commission. ascsubtag is a free-form note that shows up in your Associates Central reports under "Sub Tag" — useful for splitting clicks by Telegram channel, blog post, A/B variant, or campaign without creating a new tracking ID.
